You’ve probably heard all of the good since Bali does have a lot to offer tourists – from its stunning beaches and lush jungles, to its rich culture and delicious food. But with so many pro-Bali influencers flooding the internet with content, you may not have heard much about the negative aspects of the island. Many think that Bali may be getting a bit too popular and that the island is starting to lose its magic.
So what’s the truth? Is Bali overrated? We are going to discuss seven things you need to know about this fascinating island before you decide for yourself.

But, before we jump into the 7 reasons why Bali may be overrated, let’s talk about 5 reasons why Bali is a popular destination with so many tourists.
Why is Bali so Popular?
Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for a reason. It offers something for everyone, from stunning beaches and lush jungles to vibrant cities and historic temples. Plus, the people of Bali are warm and welcoming, making it an unforgettable place to visit.
There are endless reasons to fall in love with Bali, but here are just a few of the most popular:
1. The Beaches
Bali is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the iconic white sand beaches of Seminyak to the dramatic cliffs of Uluwatu, there’s a beach to suit every taste. And with over 30 beaches to choose from, you’re sure to find your perfect spot in the sun.
2. The Culture
Bali is a melting pot of different cultures and religions, making it a fascinating place to explore. From the traditional Balinese Hindu temples to the colorful mosques and churches, there’s a wealth of culture to discover. And with so many festivals and ceremonies taking place throughout the year, you’ll always have something new to experience.
3. The Food
If you love food, then you’ll love Bali. From fresh seafood and traditional Balinese dishes to international cuisine and gourmet restaurants, there’s something to suit every taste. And with so many amazing food markets and street food stalls, you’ll never go hungry.
4. The Nature
Bali is an island paradise, and it’s easy to see why. With its stunning rice terraces, lush jungles, and beautiful beaches, it’s no wonder that so many people fall in love with Bali. And whether you want to go hiking, birdwatching, or just relax in a hammock, there’s plenty of opportunity to do so.
5. The People
Last but not least, the people of Bali are some of the warmest and most welcoming people you’ll ever meet. From the smiling faces of the locals to the helpful staff at your hotel, you’re sure to feel at home in Bali.
Now that we’ve touched a few of the reasons why Bali is a popular travel destination let’s look at some of the reasons why Bali is overrated for some people.
7 Reasons Why Bali is Overrated for Some Tourists

1. Bali is too Touristy
Bali is a beautiful tropical island that checks all of the boxes for many tourists. However, there is growing concern that Bali may be becoming too touristy. Some parts of the island are starting to feel like one big theme park, with hordes of tourists crowding the streets and overwhelming the locals.
The memes floating around about Instagram vs. reality are far too real at many of the top tourist attractions in Bali. It’s not uncommon to need to cue up in a long line waiting for a photo opportunity.
Some people worry that Bali may lose its charm if this trend continues.
2. The Traffic is Bad in Bali
The short answer is, yes it’s bad. In the more popular tourist hotspots like Seminyak, Ubud and Canggu the traffic can be horrendous. The infrastructure that is in place in these cities does not support the number of people moving around. The narrow, winding roads are often jam-packed with cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians. For visitors who are used to North American or European cities, it can be a bit of a shock.
3. Getting Around Bali Difficult
This is a question that many people are asking as they consider whether or not to visit Bali. The answer is…it depends. While Bali is a big island, some of the more populous areas, as we mentioned above, are more difficult to get around because of traffic problems. But as you move further north on the island the traffic is not much of an issue.
It’s important to note though that there are many good transportation options in Bali. You can rent a self-drive car, hire a driver for a day or a half day (the cost is reasonable), rent a motorbike, or use the Grab ride service (like Uber).
4. Bali Has Gotten More Expensive
Bali is still relatively affordable compared to other tourist destinations, but it has gotten more expensive over the years. The cost of accommodation, food, and activities has all gone up, making it less of a budget-friendly destination than it once was.
Bali is still a great value for the money (especially compared to the US or Europe) but your dollar will not stretch as far as it will in other southeast Asian countries like, Vietnam, Thailand, or Cambodia.
5. The Stray Dogs are Out of Control
The stray dog problem in Bali has been getting out of control in recent years. The dogs are often seen roaming the streets and beaches, and they can be quite aggressive. Some people have been bitten or even killed by dogs, and the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous.
The government has been trying to control the stray dog population by catching and euthanizing them, but this has only been partially successful. There are still too many dogs on the streets, and they are causing problems for both locals and tourists.
Bali does have a rabies problem so make sure that you are up to date on your travel vaccinations for Bali.
6. Is There Enough to do in Bali?
One of the knocks that I have heard recently is that there is not enough to do in Bali. It’s true, there are not a lot of 1st world attractions like museums, shows, and art exhibits. And authentic Balinese culture can be a bit difficult to find if you just stay in the more touristy areas.
The bottom line is if you are looking for things to do and are not a big nature lover just looking to stay in the touristy resort areas then Bali may not be a good fit for you.

But, if you’re a bit adventurous and are ok venturing out you’ll find that the lush jungles, rice fields, beaches, marine life, waterfalls, and culture are some of the best you will experience in one place.
7. There Are Too Many Scams in Bali
Bali is a beautiful place, no doubt about it. But sadly, it’s also become known as a place where tourists are often scammed. From fake taxi drivers to bogus tour guides, it seems like there’s no shortage of people trying to take advantage of unsuspecting visitors.
So why are there so many scams in Bali? It could be that the massive influx of tourists over the years has made it a fertile ground for scammers. With so many people coming and going, it’s easy for someone to slip under the radar and take advantage of unsuspecting victims.
Another reason is that the island’s economy is largely dependent on tourism, and since covid had Bali almost completely closed to tourists there’s more pressure on locals to make a buck. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that scammers are a problem in Bali.
Conclusion: Is Bali Overrated?
So is Bali overrated? In my opinion, no. While it’s not perfect and there are some drawbacks (like the traffic, dogs, and scams), I still think it’s one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world. And for the money, it’s tough to beat.
If you’re looking for an exotic beach vacation that’s a bit off the beaten path, Bali is worth considering. Just be aware of the potential pitfalls so you can avoid them. Thanks for reading!
